Spatial data plays a central role in impact assessment (IA) by helping practitioners understand how impacts vary across locations and over time. By analyzing spatial relationships between impact sources, pathways, and receptors, spatial data supports clearer identification of risks, comparison of alternatives, and design of effective mitigation measures. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other tools enable practitioners to combine datasets, detect patterns, and visualize complex information through maps, strengthening both analysis and communication. When used thoughtfully—accounting for data quality, scale, and stakeholder needs—spatial data enhances transparency, supports evidence-based decision-making, and improves engagement with authorities, stakeholders, and communities.
