Demonstration of South Africa's National Environmental Screening Tool

    This free 2.5-hour webinar was hosted by the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) and organized by its South African affiliate, IAIAsa. It provides an online demonstration of the new National Environmental Screening Tool by representatives of the South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). A Q&A session was held during the final 30 minutes. 

    The Environmental Screening Tool is a geographically-based, web-enabled application which allows a proponent intending to submit an application for environmental authorization in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (2014) to pre-screen their proposed site and development footprint for any environmental sensitivity. The webinar teaches users the steps required to put in an application, what the many buttons and tabs represent and how it is used to successfully achieve the end goal of generating a report. 

    Presenters: 
    Mr. Deon Marais is a GIS Practitioner responsible for GIS systems at the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). Deon is part of the team involved in the system development of the screening tool. 

    Mrs. Marlanie Moodley is the Director for GIS at DEA is also GIS Practitioner by profession, She oversees all GIS functions at the DEA. 

    Ms. Dee Fischer is the Chief Director for Integrated Environmental Management Support at DEA, responsible for streamlining the environmental regulatory framework. 

    Mr. Zakariyyaa Oumar works for the DEA as a Chief GIS Professional managing the Data Operations Unit in the Enterprise Geospatial Section. He has been involved in the development of the screening tool.
