Section, committee, etc.: Publications Committee

Estimated time required to comoplete the project: 20 hours

Purpose/Background:

As impact assessment practitioners, it is our legal, professional, and ethical responsibility to be familiar with, understand, and abide by all applicable regulations, mandates, guidance, and protocols related to the geographical areas, communities, and environments where and with which we work.  Failure to fulfill legal requirements related to impact assessments may leave clients and agencies vulnerable to lawsuits and give rise to unanticipated project costs and delays. Conversely, it is not uncommon for clients and governmental agencies to attempt to elide impact assessment standards and responsibilities when they believe they will not be challenged on compliance. For impact assessment practitioners, it is vital to remember that impact assessments exist first and foremost for communities and environments, not for client or agency convenience, cost concerns, or imposed schedules. Being educated about applicable regulations, mandates, guidance, and protocols is vital for impact assessment practitioners to fulfill our legal, professional, and ethical obligations. In this context, it would be helpful to develop a Work Experience Program project that provides annotated links of relevant impact assessment (1) mandates and regulations, (2) guidance documents (including internal agency protocols), (3) legal rulings, and (4) literature to assist practitioners with fulfilling legal, professional, and ethical obligations. Relevant laws and guidance may variously exist and apply at international, regional, national, provincial, state, municipal, local, and/or tribal/community levels.

Before posting, it would be helpful for another practitioner working in the same regulatory and geographical area to review for additions and key omissions. This project should be approached as living and fluid, with revisions provided when and where necessary.
