    1. Celebrating the best in impact assessment:  IAIA awards

    Do you know a colleague, client, or institution that deserves an award? Help us recognize excellence and achievement in impact assessment by submitting a nomination for the 2018 IAIA Awards! Making a nomination is easy (and it is not necessary to be an IAIA member to do so)—just visit http://www.iaia.org/awards.php by 3 October 2017. Winners will be recognized at IAIA's annual conference in May 2018 in Durban, South Africa. ​

    2. Special symposium: “Mainstreaming the Mitigation Hierarchy in Impact Assessment”

    Registration is now open for a special IAIA biodiversity symposium, “Mainstreaming the Mitigation Hierarchy in Impact Assessment.” The symposium will be held 14-15 November 2017 in Washington, DC, USA. For more information, check out the preliminary program. #iaiasymposium

    Post-symposium training courses will be offered on 16-17 November 2017. Pre-registration and pre-payment by 27 October 2017 is required. For a list of courses and detailed information, visit http://conferences.iaia.org/wdc2017/training.php.

    The symposium is being hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Institutional partners for the symposium include IDB and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

    3. IAIA18 abstract submission is open

    IAIA18, “Environmental Justice in Societies in Transition,” will be held 16-19 May 2018 in Durban, South Africa. For more information, visit the conference web site. #iaia18

    Paper and poster abstract submission is open through 20 November. Please review the submission guidelines and policies and then submit your proposal.  Submissions will be closing on 20 November at 23:59 (11:59pm) US Central Standard Time.

    5. Tip:  Top brainstorming or mind mapping software and apps

    Brainstorming and mind mapping software can be useful for getting your ideas down on paper. But did you know it can also be a way to collaborate, refine, or present those ideas? Maybe you are working with a team:  communicate your ideas with others in a more visual way! Here are several brainstorming and mind mapping tools to find a solution quickly. Many of the options on this list offer flexible ways to help others see where you are coming from.     6. Upcoming Branch and Affiliate events

    EIA New Zealand’s annual conference will be held in Wellington, New Zealand, 30-31 October 2017, with the theme of “Tu Kaha: Stand Tall. Fronting up with wicked solutions.” NZAIA is offering three scholarships to support postgraduate students to attend.

    OAIA Conference 2017:  The Ontario Association for Impact Assessment (OAIA), a forum for exchanging information and promoting best practice in impact assessment in Ontario, is organizing its annual conference. The conference will take place on October 16 – 18, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The conference is entitled “The Art and Science of Environmental Assessment.” See the OAIA website for more information.

    KSEIA:  The Korean Society of Environmental Impact Assessment (KSEIA) will hold its autumn conference 19-21 October at Jeju National University, Jeju Islands, South Korea. The theme of the conference is “Ecosystem Services and Impact Assessment.” For more information, contact Ms Sukjin Jeon kseia92@daum.net.

    AQEI Awards Banquet:  The Association québécoise pour l’évaluation d’impacts (AQÉI) Career Award is a distinction awarded to a member of the AQEI in recognition of the excellence of their professional accomplishments. The recipient is considered by his or her peers as a reference within the Quebec environmental assessment community. The awards ceremony will take place at the AQÉI Gala Benefit on 27 September 2017 at the restaurant Le Cercle in Montreal. The Benefit Gala will be an opportunity for the AQEI to honor the exemplary work of professionals in the field of environmental assessments. Four additional awards of excellence will be awarded to members or organizations that have made the most strides in recent years. For more information, see the AQEI website.
