    1.  IAIA17

IAIA17, “Impact Assessment’s Contribution to the Global Efforts in Addressing Climate Change,” was held 4-7 April 2017 in Montréal, Canada.

IAIA17 welcomed about 1,000 delegates from 74 countries in Montreal, Canada.

Presenters are being contacted separately with instructions for uploading their presentations to the online proceedings. In the coming days, these presentations will be posted at http://conferences.iaia.org/2017/proceedings.php along with photos, the #iaia17 Twitter stream, and more.

All IAIA17delegates will soon receive an e-mail link to an online conference evaluation. We hope you will take a few minutes to complete the survey. Your feedback is very important to us as we strive to continually improve our services to you.

Did you know that if you paid the nonmember rate for the conference, you are now a member for one year? Be sure to take advantage of all the resources IAIA offers, including online access to all articles in IAIA’s journal, Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal.

A special thanks to the IAIA17 sponsors:  Golder Associates; The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF); Ouranos; WSP Canada; Stantec; Hydro-Québec; Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change; Tourisme Montréal; Gran Tierra Energy; Export Development Canada; Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency; Fisheries and Oceans Canada; Rio Tinto Alcan; European Investment Bank; Engineers Canada; Government of the Northwest Territories; NORAD; Nunavut Impact Review Board; Sichuan Tianyu Petroleum; Taylor and Francis; Observatoire international de la santé et des services sociaux; Ministère des Relations internationales et de la Francophonie; ERM; Patrimoine canadien / Canadian Heritage; Intrinsik Corp; and Amec Foster Wheeler.

    2.  Free HIA webinar offered by IAIA

Are you just getting started incorporating health into your impact assessments but don’t know where to start? Are you unsure what health considerations should be included in an IA? Health factors should be an important and integrated consideration in all impact assessments, not just a side report or an afterthought. IAIA will offer a free webinar on Tuesday, 25 April, on “Health Considerations in Impact Assessment.” The presenter will be IAIA’s own Francesca Viliani, recent 2017 IAIA Individual Award winner for her sustained and significant contributions to HIA.

    3.  Request for proposals for an integrated baseline study, Niger Delta

The Centre for Environment & Human Rights (CEHRD), in collaboration with the Movement for the Support of the Ogoni Peoples (MOSOP), are commissioning an integrated baseline study that will allow communities to track progress of a multi-stakeholder “clean up” program for the Niger Delta announced by the Government of Nigeria in 2016.

Interested bidders are invited to download the Terms of Reference and submit their proposals on the IAIA CommunityConnect webpage. The deadline to receive proposals is 2 May 2017.

IAIA CommunityConnect provides direct access by civil society and communities to the technical expertise of environmental, health, and social scientists that are found across the IAIA membership. IAIA CommunityConnect is a matchmaking service that enables communities to commission their own studies and expert advice.

    4.  2nd Charlie Wolf symposium held

The symposium, the second of its kind, was held 23 February at the Federal Ministry of Environment (FME), Abuja, Nigeria, in honor of Charlie Wolf and his work. Charlie Wolf was known for his passion, professionalism, and work to bring about the platform known as IAIA today. Specifically, Charlie Wolf is recognized and admired for his lecturing at the Federal University of Technology, Yola (Nigeria).

The theme of the symposium was “Strengthening Impact Assessment Through Partnership, Research and Mentorship.” The objective was to improve environmental impact assessment across industrial, academic, and government institutions in the country with the aid of research and mentorship.

This event was conceived and delivered through the Association for Environmental Impact Assessment of Nigeria (AEIAN).

Participants were drawn from both public and private sectors, members of academia, representatives of telecoms, and consultants. 68 participants attended, including two speakers who presented on “Research as Enterprise” and “Mentoring in the Public Sector,” respectively.

    5. IAEA/University of Aveiro/IAIA workshop held

Dr. Miguel Coutinho held an excellent workshop in Tehran 27 February on "EIA & Climate Change." The workshop was organized by IAIA’s Iranian Affiliate, IAEA (Iranian Association for Environmental Assessment) in collaboration with the Environmental Research Institute and the University of Aveiro. Dr. Coutinho also gave a presentation on IAIA and its activities. IAEA is looking forward to holding more joint events. Submitted by Lisa Pourlak.
