    Another cycle of IAIA's 12-week Professional Development Program "Foundations of Impact Assessment" online course will be held from 23 January through 16 April 2023. Participants start and complete the course within this period according to the schedule they arrange with their trainer. Register by 9 January 2023. Seats are limited!

    Europe unveils plans to cut plastic pollution
    Mandatory return schemes for plastic bottles look set to be rolled out in the EU as part of the European Commission’s circular economy proposals just published. The new rules will have to be approved by the European Parliament and member states to become law.

    After U.N. climate deal, “loss and damage” funding two years off
    Countries agreed at last month's United Nations climate summit to create a fund to help poor countries damaged by climate disasters, but it will likely take two years to work out where the money will come from. The deal to create a "loss and damage" fund was hailed as a breakthrough for developing country negotiators at the COP27 climate talks in Egypt.

    All regions experienced water extremes in 2021
    All regions of the world saw water extremes last year—both floods and droughts—and billions of people had insufficient fresh water. Large areas of the planet recorded drier than normal conditions in 2021, the UN's World Meteorological Organization said in its first annual State of Global Water Resources report.

    Host city for 2030 Winter Olympics hasn't yet been named. Why? It may not be cold enough
    Concern over warmer temperatures and vanishing snow in some of the world’s winter playgrounds has put the selection of a host city for the 2030 Winter Olympics on hold. The IOC said this week it needs more time to address the challenges of climate change. Only one location from the previous 21 Winter Games would be cold enough today to host the winter Olympics, a study found.
