Free webinar: Impact assessment and the circular economy The circular economy is a new way to plan, design, make, and use things within environmental limits. This free 1-hour webinar will explore IA’s role in enabling the circular economy: explaining what it is, its relationship with sustainability, and how as professionals we can better consider it in our work. Free webinar: The impacts of COVID-19 on field research The Environmental Peacebuilding Association and IAIA are co-hosting a free, 1-hour webinar to explore how field researchers are developing different and new ways to conduct research. Charles Kelly, co-chair of IAIA’s Disasters and Conflict Section, developed this event featuring four field researchers presenting their personal experiences during COVID-19, followed by a moderated discussion. This webinar will be held 18 February 2021 at 09:00 Central / 15:00 GMT. IAIA Board of Directors election results Please join us in welcoming President-Elect/Director Gaby Factor and Board Directors Victoria Márquez-Mees and Bryony Walmsley to the IAIA Board. Black Lives Matter task force calls for volunteers In July 2020 a call was made for those who may want to serve on a BLM task force. Unforeseen circumstances delayed the task force's start, so IAIA is again making a call for volunteers. New volunteers will be combined with those previously confirmed, and a first meeting is anticipated to be held in March 2021. Contact Executive Director David Bancroft to express your interest. Pandemic IA Participation task force initiated The Board has appointed a Pandemic Impact Assessment Participation task force, chaired by member Charles Kelly, to (1) review and make recommendations on multi-lateral and national COVID-19 impact assessment guidance, (2) provide guidance on IAIA program services related to COVID-19, and (3) oversee future COVID-19 surveys focused on member services. Coming soon: New online training courses IAIA is partnering with interested IAIA20 training course presenters to offer their courses in an online format throughout 2021. The first of the online courses will take place before the May conference; the remainder will follow during the rest of the year. A wet Amazon may be more resilient to a drying climate than thought: Study In some of the wettest parts of the Amazon rainforest, dry air may increase plant photosynthesis rates — a response that contradicts the assumptions of many climate models, according to a recent study published in Science Advances. The findings could have massive ramifications for existing climate change models, which must accurately represent photosynthetic processes in the Amazon if they are to produce meaningful results, given the widespread impact of these vast forests on climate and weather patterns.
