IAIA21: Abstract submissions are open!
IAIA21, “Smartening Impact Assessment in Challenging Times,†will take place 18-21 May 2021 in Seville, Spain.
Papers and posters from IAIA20 will be carried over, but we are also accepting new presentations. Do you have a great new project? Has COVID-19 affected your work? A session is waiting for you. Paper and poster abstract submissions are open now through 29 October.

Innovation Grant applications due 16 September
IAIA is accepting applications for its next round of Innovation Grants. Any current IAIA member, Section, Branch, or Affiliate may submit an application by 16 September. These small grants range from USD $2,000 to $5,000 and are meant to encourage innovative, short-term projects to advance IAIA’s vision and mission.
Global Giving fundraiser for IA in Africa project
IAIA has been provisionally accepted as a member of Global Giving, a crowd funding site that has close relationships with many major corporations. Global Giving is challenging us to raise US$6,000 from our members and friends between 14-30 September toward the project “Build the Sustainability Skills of Ten African Leaders." If we succeed, additional fundraising doors will be opened for IAIA. Read more about this initiative here, and please give here.

UN report: COVID crisis does little to slow climate change
The global response to COVID-19 has barely made a dent in the causes of climate change, according to a major new report. While emissions of CO2 plummeted during lockdown, concentrations of the long-lasting gas have continued to rise in the atmosphere.
Luxury yacht owners made to pay $100k after anchor drop ruins 431 coral colonies
The owners of a luxury yacht that dropped its anchor in a coral bed off the Hawaiian coast, damaging 431 coral colonies in the process, have been charged US$100,000, less than the cost of renting the boat for two days, for the incident.
Rising waters on Kenya’s Great Rift Valley lakes
After months of unusually heavy rain, thousands of people in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley have evacuated due to intense flooding. Rising waters have inundated homes, businesses, farms, and even entire islands. The torrential rains have also caused two important lakes to swell, creating several issues for local wildlife and businesses.
More than half of government environmental scientists say their work has been suppressed
Of the more than 200 environmental scientists from Australian government, university and non-government organizations (NGOs) consulted for the survey, those working for government reported the highest rates of suppression or interference in communicating their work publicly.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, the closure of ageing dumps is helping to clear the air
In the last 10 years, governments have closed some of the most polluted landfills in the region, including sprawling facilities in Brazil, Mexico and Nicaragua. The drive is part of an effort by countries to cut down on pollution and stem the flood of greenhouse gases and comes after years of lobbying by environmentalists.
